Taara
Fast, affordable connectivity using beams of light
About Taara
About Taara

Reimagining the future of connectivity

Nearly 3 billion people remain unconnected to the internet, and billions more struggle with slow, unreliable, or expensive connectivity. Fiber-optic cable can support high speeds, but rolling out an extensive fiber network through urban areas or difficult terrain can be time-consuming and costly. Where fiber fails to reach, operators and service providers often look to wireless technologies using radio frequency. But with global internet traffic projected to grow ~25% annually, radio spectrum alone cannot support the world’s growing data demand.

Taara is working to bring fast, affordable connectivity to the world using a new approach to wireless optical communication (WOC) technology. Taara uses beams of light to deliver high-speed, high-capacity connectivity over long distances. In the same way traditional fiber uses light to carry data through cables in the ground, Taara uses light to transmit information as very narrow, invisible beams. This beam is sent between two small Taara terminals to create a link.

By extending our partner’s fiber optic networks, Taara brings fiber-like speeds to areas where it’s not economically viable, or too difficult to install fiber. These include over rivers and sea straits, across rugged terrains and national parks, or in areas where it is unsafe to dig trenches for cables.

Meet Taara’s founder and the Taara team who are on a mission to bring abundant and affordable internet to the world.

Technology

The speed of fiber, the flexibility of wireless

Taara’s wireless technology can transmit information at high speeds of up to 20 gigabits per second and distances up to 20 km. Each Taara link consists of two terminals containing mirrors and sensors that point, acquire, and track beams of light, ensuring they remain on target. It’s important that the signal between Taara’s terminals isn't interrupted, so they’re placed up high, on towers, poles, or rooftops. Even if a tower sways due to wind, or a bird flies through the beam’s path, our technology ensures uninterrupted communication. As Taara operates in the light-based optical spectrum, it unlocks 30 times more data capacity than radio frequency.

Network operators and service providers can rapidly deploy and redeploy Taara links to bring connectivity to new areas, provide back-up to existing infrastructure, or deliver one-time bandwidth to crowded events and even cities.
