Ditch Bag — There’s no “one size fits all...”
On average, boat owners are a safety-conscious lot when it comes to outfitting and operating
our primary vessels. From flares and life-jackets to EPIRBs and VHF radios, most of us try to
anticipate Murphy’s laws and cheat Davy Jones prior to even leaving the dock, be it for an afternoon
on the water or a multi-year cruise. That’s why I’m constantly amazed at the number of
boaters who fail to properly outfit their dinghy to the same level of safety.
Boating Safety
• Stay hydrated and wear water proof sun-protection
• Enough life jackets for every person on board
• Comply with local boat operator licensing laws
• Cautious of "No Wake Zones" sometimes called "Slow Speed Zones"
• Towed boats - decontaminate your boat after usage to prevent the spread of invasive
species into new bodies of water
• Up to date on Navigation Rules: a crossing situation, a head-on situation, or an over
taking situation
• Know all the Navigational Aids: buoys, markers, lights,
beacons, etc. and what the markings on each mean
• Have a well-stocked Emergency Safety Kit on board...
to include a Rescue Laser emergency signaling device & whistle
Summer Fun
Summer is in full swing, and by now you’ve probably been out
on your boat at least a few times. But, have you tried something
different—like, really different—while out cruising? Tow sports,
fishing, boat camping, sightseeing by sea, dock-and-dine, sunrise
& sunset cruises, going to a concert by boat and swimming
are all fun, but it's what ever you prefer... time to mix things up!
4) Flares—like accurate head shots during the zombie apocalypse, you just can’t
have too many of them. SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) flares are approved by the
International Maritime Organization for use on the high seas and although more
expensive, they burn brighter and last longer. In addition to pyrotechnics, newer
Electronic Visual Distress Signals such as laser flares offer additional options.
Unlike pyrotechnic flares, the Rescue Laser Flare ® Green
is non-flammable, environmentally safe and
can operate continuously for 5 hours on a
single long-life replaceable lithium battery.
Brilliant green light makes it the most visible and
preferred by Search and Rescue (SAR) professionals.
