Park in the North parking lot and enter Door 16. The event is in Room A170 which is immediately to the right after going through Door 16.

I cannot attend the in-person CME event on Saturday, October 28th. Will you be offering another CME?

Accepted Answer

We will probably offer another in-person CME event in spring 2024.

Will this CME count towards the 2-hour Wisconsin requirement for opioid education?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this requirement has changed. As of 2023, courses must be AMA or AOA Category 1, but will no longer require specific approval from the Medical Examining Board.

What is the new DEA requirement for addiction medicine training?

Accepted Answer

At the end of 2022, Congress passed the MATE Act mandating that all DEA licensees complete 8 hours of addiction medicine training.

What requirements are there for the addiction medicine training?

Accepted Answer

The training needs to cover treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders and screening, brief intervention, and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid or other substance use disorders.

By when do I need to complete this addiction medicine training?

Accepted Answer

You need to complete the 8 hours of training by the time of your initial registration with the DEA or when your 3-year renewal is due. This applies to all initial registrations or renewals starting June 21st, 2023.

My DEA license doesn't need to be renewed until 2025. Do I need to complete the training now?

Accepted Answer

No, you have until your license is expiring to complete the 8 hours of addiction medicine training.

Question 9

Is it true that you don't need a special license anymore to prescribe buprenorphine/Suboxone?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Congress abolished the X-waiver at the end of 2022. Anyone with a DEA license to prescribe Schedule III controlled substances can prescribe buprenorphine products for the treatment of opioid use disorder.

Can I prescribe methadone for opioid use disorder out of my clinic?

Accepted Answer

No, the regulations around methadone prescribing for opioid use disorder have not changed. Methadone can only be prescribed for opioid use disorder out of an opioid treatment program/methadone clinic.
