Course Update

Hi Everyone,

Just an update on what's happening around your course.

Cart Paths

It is not too late to put your name on a plaque and help the Club extend the cart paths around the course. Your donation of $200 will be matched by the Club. The plaques will be on hole six and will continue on to hole seven. So now is the time to put your name down. The path on six will start soon so to ensure you don't miss out please email Michael at manager@mackaygolf.com.au today.

Around the Course

The new nursery is looking good for future use around the course. This nursery will give us a great source of good clean new Bermuda 328 grass for all future greens and repair work.

Current Works Under Way

  • Levelling of the 17th tee to enlarge the ladies tee area
  • Bunker works completed on holes 4 and 7
  • Clean up completed of the dumping area over next to the Turf Farm
  • The continuation of battering the bank and clean up around the dam on hole 15 and 13
  • Starting on the 13th the removal of the putting surfaces on holes 3 and 11 will commence, closely followed by the fairway and tee on 11. The designs for this work will be put up in the club house next week for everyone to see what the finished product will look like.

Reminder of where we are at and where we are going with the course and the master plan for our future.

Greens Report 2019/2020

  1. Our initial consultant was Dr Brett Morris and in March 2019 he recommended to consider a future capital works programme which would result in the resurfacing of the greens to ensure an even mono-sand surface. He advised that his suspicions were the greens were not draining correctly due to the sand not built to USGA profiles.
  2. With the advice given to the committee, and after a member consultation period, the Club decided to start the green resurfacing program within a time frame to be completed. The full reasons are in the reports from David Burrup which have been shared via the App and emails with all members over the last few years.
  3. The Major issues in our greens are sub-surface conditions causing incorrect growing medium and allowing disease to thrive. Also there are inconsistencies in the putting surface, i.e. more than one type of grass growing.
  4. The sub-surface issues in our greens have led us to the monthly chemical, solid tining and sanding programs given to us from the soil agronomist experts in conjunction with David Burrup. We have followed these programs over the last twelve months to return the greens to the best possible quality but this is only a band aid fix and will allow us to maintain them while the resurfacing program is completed. This program will change slightly over the next year due to the success of the work we have done following our programs set out by soil specialists.
  5. When it comes to the new greens, the top 20-30cm is being removed and new clean sand put in place which can take around two to three years before they soften up.
  6. When it comes to bunkers, they are being fixed all the time and will always be one of our biggest expenditures in our climate with our rainfall. We are continually removing bunkers as we go with grass facing to lower maintenance costs. We have also chosen to do most of this work at the same time as the green resurfacing to avoid too much GUR or areas out of play during these works.
  7. Yes the front entrance to most of our greens are holding water and this is mostly due to the soil type and lack of drainage in these areas. This will be addressed on the 3rd and 11th greens this year and you will see extra drainage and works in these areas.

I will take this opportunity to thank everyone for being patient while we continue to repair and improve our greens from the issues we were suffering just over twelve months ago. While the three new greens resurfaced last year are coming along well they will continue to improve over the next year. These greens have only been in use for nine months. While the rest of the greens look very good, and are playing very nicely, the work we have put in over the last year i.e. XXL coring, the continued monthly aeration and sanding with chemicals and fertiliser, has helped us maintain them at this standard.

The current monthly coring program has been pushed out to three monthly. The greens staff will monitor this to ensure we don't let any of the previous issues come back and also to stay on top of any new problems. We always have to remember this work is a band aid fix at a cost. It is to allow us to have quality greens while we continue to resurface the greens, remove the top 300mm and all the many different types of grasses growing on these putting surfaces while returning them to a clean smooth Bermuda 328 surface. David Burrup's design will alter our putting surface to take our greens and course to the next level with many more pin positions and challenges available to us.

Please understand that the best interests of members and the future of the Club have been considered at all times by the Board when it comes to our course and these works need to happen while we can afford this expense.

Again I need to thank Graham McClelland for the excavator, Rod Allan for the dump truck and Dad's Army and all the volunteers around the course. Without them we would not have the great course we play on every week. These people continue to save the Club a very large amount of money with their hard work and generous donation of their time.

Regards

Shane Page

President's Report September 2021

Hi Fellow Golfers,

Members & Player participation, since Covid-19 changed the way we live, continues to increase. Many more events have been completed for the year since my last letter and of special note is the Veterans Wintersun Carnival which, from all reports, was a resounding success. Congratulations again to the Vets Committee, Tony Bell, Director of Wintersun, Manager Michael and all of our staff and the many volunteers who assisted with presenting our Club in fantastic order and making everyone feel welcome.

Current projects either started or awaiting government grant approval:

  1. The development of a Turf Nursery on the left side of the 4th Tee - completed
  2. Renovation of #3 and #11 Greens, the front of #3 green and #11 Fairway - see Greens Directors Report
  3. Updating our accounting systems - almost complete
  4. Clubhouse initial improvements to extend the lounge area over the old stair well - government grant applied for and should have an answer prior to the AGM - awaiting grant approval
  5. Lease of land near the 8th tee to Optus for the installation of a tower similar to the Telstra tower to the left of the 12th Fairway. The revenue to the Club is initially $15,000.00 per annum for approximately a 10 square metre lot - ongoing
  6. Planning for an upgrade to the Greens department shed and environmental requirements - we are moving forward with the environmental requirements

We also have many minor improvements to our great facility underway following input from Members last year which formed our five and ten year strategic plan.

All the best to everyone playing in our Foursomes Championship sponsored by Mackay Toyota and all other events scheduled for the next month.

Yours in Golf

Max Direen

Mackay Golf Club now has two defibrillators, one in the Pro Shop and the second in the Bar.

We have a number of staff who are trained in first aid, CPR and to operate the defibrillator.

What is a defibrillator?

A defibrillator is a life-saving device used to treat Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), a condition that occurs when the heart unexpectedly stops pumping due to a sudden knock or an underlying medical condition. When a defibrillator analyses the heart rhythm and recognises an abnormal rhythm, it will decide whether a shock is required to be delivered or not.

When is a defibrillator used?

In accordance with the DRSABCD Action Plan, if a person is not breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be commenced. A defibrillator should be applied whenever CPR is performed. If the person is breathing, regardless of whether they are responsive (conscious) or not responsive (unconscious), a defibrillator is not required.

What if I attached the defibrillator to a conscious person? Can I harm them?

If there is normal heart rhythm, an AED will not allow a shock to be delivered.

For example, if a person thinks the casualty is not breathing but the heart is beating, an AED will assess whether there is a heart rhythm and advise by voice command that a shock is not required. The AED will not allow a shock to be delivered.

Why don't I just wait until an ambulance arrives?

Defibrillation is most effective when carried out as quickly as possible in the first few minutes after SCA.

Captain's Letter

Hi All,

Another big month of golf behind us with the Wintersun Tournament and the Mixed Foursome Championships. Congratulations to all competitors and Winners of these events.

This Saturday will be the last with a full-length course before renovations begin on 3 (new green and surrounds) and 11 (fairway and green renovation).

For those of you who missed it, the course rating and indexes will be changed over the period of the renovations. Unfortunately you will note that the indexes are split even more unevenly across the front and back nines than they are now. Being that the front 9 will have 4 par 3's and be a par 32 this could not be helped so please bear with us on this. Once the full course resumes, we will look at the indexes again to see if they can be split more evenly in the future. The good news is, by doing this, you should not notice too much difference on your handicaps.

For the renovation period the course will look like this:

The new indexes will be:

For Men Blue Tees                                                                         For Ladies Red Tees

As noted in the last newsletter call up holes on 2 and 5 were to be trialled, though it seems this hasn't been fully communicated to all members. In the coming days signs will be placed at these holes and as a reminder here are the details from July's letter

  1. The call up hole is designed when conditions dictate that a group is on the tee waiting while the group in front have not all yet reached the green
  2. When this happens, once all players are on the green and their balls marked-proceed to a safe area and call the group on the tee up. Resume putting as soon as the last person has teed off
  3. No need to call up if you are all already on the green putting and the group behind is only just coming up to the tee

Please be sure to adhere to this directive so we can accurately gauge its effectiveness.

Rakes in Bunker

Again, a lot of feedback on these and the topic was discussed at the last Match Committee meeting. You will also notice on a couple of holes some trial rake holders that we would like some feedback on as well.

For all the other bunkers the recommendation is that rakes be placed in the centre of the bunker, parallel with the fairway on the same hole. We will put up some photos of these around the clubhouse in the near future. Another reminder that raking the bunkers after use is essential for the enjoyment of all on the course. Please take a consistent approach to raking the bunkers well after use.

Greenkeepers Revenge

Well, they certainly didn't hold back did they? Some very interesting pins and Green obstacles. A big thank you to Gary West from Inspire Accounting for sponsoring the day and for making the pins on the other days look easy-LOL. A great day had by all and an event that is always well attended.

I hope everyone took time out to thank Shane and his greens staff for putting the effort in every day to keep the course in good condition

Cancer Charity Day Saturday 25th September

Saturday 25th September is a 2 ball Ambrose competition for Men and Ladies as a Cancer Charity Day. Last year we ran a Pink & Blue Day, this year the theme is yellow in honour of #DoingItForJarrod

Jarrod Lyle was a PGA Golf Professional and ambassador for Challenge. Following his death in 2018 Challenge created the campaign to honour Jarrod and to continue his tireless work and legacy by inviting golf clubs around Australia to participate in a Yellow Golf Day to raise money for cancer.

As a golf club we are all touched by cancer at different stages of our life, and it would be great to see everyone wearing something yellow on this day.  Anyone wishing to make any cash donations towards the raffle prizes please contact me directly ASAP.

Good Golfing

Sharyn Harris

Ladies Captain

Thursday Comp News

The Thursday competitions are still attracting over 120 players each week.  A massive field on the Greenkeepers Revenge Day sponsored by Inspire Accounting had 152 players "enjoying" the pin placements and the speed of the greens.

The team with the best score was Matt Bastin and Elliot Beel 63.25 however, best scores don't always win on these days! The winners were Jack Avery and Brett McCulloch 66.5.  Matt and Elliot were unlucky not to win but, as we all know, pro golfers can't win amateur events.

The 4BBB winners for the year are: -

Nett Graham Brown and Neville Pearse 121

Gross Steve Harris and Peter Koutlis 138

Aussie Home Loans Monthly Medal results: -

Winner A Grade Mark Rhodes 69 c/b

Runner Up A Grade Brendon Walsh 69

Winner B Grade Kanon Krause 70

Runner Up B Grade Jack Avery 71

Winner C Grade Orla Anderson 71

Runner Up C Grade Ken Kraatz 72

Congratulations to all the winners!

Our next event is two rounds of the Men's Pairs Aggregate Stableford. Round one is on 23rd September with round two on 30th September. The last round will be a shotgun start at 12.30pm.

I would like to thank The Grove for their sponsorship. Stephen McRae, the publican, has been very generous and has sponsored this event and other Thursdays that are not already sponsored.

Thanks Stephen.

Please make a note of this date 14th October 2021, this will be known as Dad's Army Day.

A huge day is expected as we say thanks to the many volunteers who give up their time on a Wednesday morning rain, hail (maybe not) or shine. If anyone is interested in giving three hours on a Wednesday morning, please contact the office for more details.

Yours in Thursday Golf
